Giveaway Day in Shades of Gray

It’s Giveaway Day over on Sew, Mama, Sew. If you haven’t heard of this event before, well you’ve been living under a rock. Seriously, if you like sewing, crafting, or just handmade goodness, get yourself over there and check out the hundreds of blogs with something to give away this week!

Thanks for stopping by Sewing by Moonlight. Things have been pretty quiet around here as I’ve basically been on maternity leave from this blog space. I miss it, and I especially miss my nighttime sewing sessions, but with a six week old, I’m just beginning to come out of the sleepless newborn haze. I hope to get my sewing and blogging time back soon.

In the little time I’ve been able to sneak in with my sewing machine, I’ve been working on my first project for the Moda Bake Shop. With a white background, it doesn’t fit in with the May “color pop” theme they have going on over there, but it should work nicely for the June “baby and bridal shower” theme.

Moda Bake Shop project

When that’s finished, I will finally publish the long ago promised paper piecing pattern for the book I used on the Nancy Drew tote.

paper pieced book

In June, I’m also still planning to begin my Road Trip Quilt Along here on Sewing by Moonlight. I LOVE my Road Trip Quilt from last summer, and I’m looking forward to creating another great series of state tutorials. This year, I’m planning 12 states in 12 weeks instead of 16, and this is an imagined road trip since my family will not be traveling across the country this year. You can find the plan for the 2013 Road Trip Quilt Along here. The blocks will look something like this:

I would LOVE for you to join the Road Trip this summer. So, please, subscribe to Sewing by Moonlight in your favorite reader or Like Sewing by Moonlight on Facebook to stay up to date and learn when the tutorials are posted!

And now for the Giveaway. I love gray as a neutral. I think it looks great with just about any color. For you, a fat eighth bundles of some of my favorite grays, and because I can’t give you just gray, a fat quarter of one of my favorite prints from Amy Schimler’s Fly Away line.

I love grey too! I find it hard to find may grey fabrics, so usually go to charity shops (thrift stores) to find stuff i like. I like blogs that make it feel like you actually listening to the writer in person & if they impart some sewing knowledge all the better! X

  3. Kathy Gentry
    Kathy Gentry says:

Beautiful pictures of your new baby and family! Congratulations. I love following blogs to see the creative projects quilters are making. Of course, I always appreciate finding a tutorial I can use–like the Nancy Drew block you are going to post. There are so many creative quilters with great talent. I have learned so much from participating in blog hops and reading tutorials on quilt sites.

  4. Beth Strand
    Beth Strand says:

I think, more than anything else, it’s personality that brings me back to a blog. I love tutorials but I love nice chatty blogs where you feel like you are popping in for a moment with a virtual friend. Of course, that might be because I do daycare at home and a minute or two on a blog post (especially in summer when I have kids for nearly 12 hours a day) is like a moment of adult conversation! lol Can’t wait for the state quilts….that sounds like fun!

  5. PennyDog

I second personality- if a writer has a friendly style and a bit of humour that”s good for me. Pretty pictures are also a must 🙂

I read so many blogs that a lot of time I will just skip to the next one if there is a lot of text and no pictures. I also love tutorials.

  9. carla
    carla says:

Thanks for the chance to win! In my RSS feed, usually a good photo helps catch my eye – as does full-text feeds, so I can read the article without having to leave. If it’s a tutorial I want to pin, or something I want to comment on, I’ll head over to the blog itself to do so. I like tutorials for semi-complicated blocks – something I can’t figure out on my own.

I forgot all about giveaway day, I’ve been swamped with work! Sometimes it falls during finals week when I have more time as I wait for the students to finish their exams, but this year I’ll be lucky if I enter 2 or 3 giveaways. Oh well!

I like writing and pictures and stories on a blog, basically I need to feel like I’m starting to get to know the person or I won’t follow the blog. And yeah, if you already have known the person for almost 20 years… that helps. 😉

  11. Beulah

For me it is a combination of all three, leaning heavily on the writing and photos. Tutorials are nice but I tend to read blogs for chats with friends and less for how-to’s.

And probably since I’m not very good at sharing a bit of personal life on my blog, I’m drawn to those who can do it.

I like fresh modern quilts/ projects. I feel that I love to come back to bloggers that inspire me with their approach of fresh and modern. Good photos are a must-have. And a nice format to read. Some bloggers use types that are difficult to read and some post are in a weird format to read in a RSS reader. And I also like if a blogger shares a bit of her/ his life. A bit. Somehow I like bloggers better that write occasionally to bloggers that write daily (without having much to say). Sorry, that was a lengthy answer, didn’t mean to bore you with my thoughts :o)

For me, it’s a combination of feeling like the writer and I would hit it off in real life, how well they write, and how much I look at their recent projects and fall in love – while it’s nice to find one that ticks all three boxes for me, if my first impression is that they score particularly highly on any one element, I’m likely to follow them. If they score on more than one element, I’m likely to come back regularly and comment. NB, having been watching the Big Bang Theory with my engineer OH, I feel the need to specify that I don’t actually give numerical scores!

Thanks for the chance to win those lovely grays. I don’t have many grey fabrics in my stash so neutrals are greatly appreciated.

  276. Lholy-chan
    Lholy-chan says:

Thank you for this nice giveaway! It’s hard to put into words exactly what makes me come back to a blog. I guess it’s a mix of several things: a writing that speaks to me, projects that inspire me (I mainly sew clothes so I tend to follow blogs that talk at least partly about garment sewing). Nice pictures help of course. Tutorials are nice but not the first reason why I follow a blog.

  280. Faye
    Faye says:

For me, it’s photos and a variety of sewing projects. I like to see lots of photos, and I get frustrated when the photos aren’t varied enough to show me all of the details of a project — I like to see a couple of photos that show the full project, plus some close-up photos so I can see the details of the quilting. And, of course, good writing always helps!

  281. Tamie
    Tamie says:

First of all, congratulations on the new baby. I have three girls too. I like all the things you mentioned on a blog but mostly, I want to get to know the person too. Thanks for participating in the Giveaway Day.

  282. Dawn
    Dawn says:

I love the grey! Right now I’m working on a grey + purple flanellette quilt which is super-simple, but is also going to be super cozy!

I’d love to win! Although I don’t DO it when I blog – most of the blogs I love have start-to-finish projects… showing off the inspiration, the work-in-progress, and the finished versions – sometimes all in one post, but sometimes spread out over several. It’s wonderful to follow along!

  283. Janet
    Janet says:

I like a blog that is down home and friendly. I’m not interested in reading blogs that are all about advertising a person’s shop or book or whatever. And when I leave a comment on a blog and don’t get a response (of course things like giveaway days are an exception) then I am not that likely to stick around.

  292. Ruth
    Ruth says:

I come back to a blog that shows finished projects that appeal to me. Quilting blogs that have a lot of non-sewing related posts eventually get cleaned out of my reader unless I know the person (and am therefore more interested in those things).

  293. Sarah

I think I go back to blogs, because of the inspirational sayings, the layout, the tutorials and the information and creativity I can get.

  301. Fran
    Fran says:

I think it’s a combination. Tutorials are nice, but if I want to make something I can search for one….so I guess they need to be engaging tutorials that help me learn a new skill and are well done so I can figure them out. I also like to feel connection with the blogger, to be invested and to feel they are invested and care at least a bit about me. I don’t need to know marriage details, but I would like to get to know you, why you create, how did you get from point A to B, some encouragement and inspiration. Thanks for the giveaway.

  302. Jenny
